Entwicklung des Spiels
 

Über ein Jahrzehnt lang lieferte sich Sonic ein Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen mit Nintendos Maskottchen Mario, bis Sega den Heimkonsolenmarkt verließ. Er tritt nun auf verschiedenen anderen Plattformen auf.

Sonic ersetzte Alex Kidd, der bis 1990 Segas Maskottchen war. Der schnelle Igel sollte die Geschwindigkeit von Segas (damals) neuer Konsole Mega Drive unter Beweis stellen. Naoto Ōshima entwarf den Charakter, während Yuji Naka der Hauptprogrammierer für das dazugehörige Spiel war. Später wurde Yuji Naka Chef des Sonic-Teams.
